5 Tips for Keeping Yourself Safe and Secure While Travelling

5 Tips for Keeping Yourself Safe and Secure While Travelling

From VPNs to 2FA, safeguard your digital life on the go!

Travelling the world can be a very exciting thing to do, not only will you learn things about the wider world and gain new perspectives, but you’ll meet amazing people, enjoy incredible adventures, and probably learn a thing or two about yourself along the way.

In the modern world of technology and gadgets, many will work as they travel in order to fund their trip, but this does come with a few issues; most notably staying secure online as you travel. Let’s take a look at the 5 best ways you are sure to remain secure wherever you are, and whatever you’re working on.

1 - Always Use a VPN

One of the things you’ll notice as you travel is that internet connections are nowhere near as trustworthy as the one you use at home- and this goes double for public wifi. A VPN, or virtual private network, has several functions but the main use is securing your connection to the internet and blocking outside entities from stealing data, tracking usage and other nefarious things- companies like Surfshark offer great packages for those working on the move and there are plenty of extra benefits.

If, for example, you’re in Asia and are struggling to watch your favourite Netflix show due to geo-restrictions, simply flick on your VPN, choose the UK as your country of origin, and away you go. Make any network a trusted friend and keep your work secure wherever you are, unblock websites anywhere in the world, browse with total security and ensure your precious information remains private with a VPN - read more about Surfshark and how their VPN can boost your security around the world.

2 - Update Your Devices and Software

Make sure to update all your devices before you leave, including tablets, laptops and smartphones, with the latest software patches and security updates; out of date software can leave weak points in the armour of your system to be exploited by viruses and other users whilst you browse.

Keeping your software up to date can be the difference between being secure and being a target.

3 - Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

For an extra layer of security to your online accounts, try two-factor authentication. It works by requiring both a password and a secondary form of verification, like sending a verification code to your phone, to log in. It’s one of the latest and most popular ways to stay safe online, and it's very easy to use.

Anyone trying to gain unauthorised access to an account would need not only your password but access to your phone in real time in order to access anything- it’s simple yet very effective.

4 - Backup Your Data

Before setting off on your travels, take the time to back up your important data, such as photos, documents, and contacts, to a secure location. Consider using cloud storage services or external hard drives to create backups of your files, ensuring that you can recover them in case your devices are lost, stolen, or compromised during your journey.

5 - Practice Safe Browsing Habits

While exploring new destinations, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and overlook basic online security practices as you try to connect to your socials, chat to family or organise your next exciting adventure.

Avoid suspicious websites, don’t download anything that you don’t trust, and avoid contact with strangers on unknown sites- safe browsing gives a better chance of remaining secure.

The Final Word

Prioritising online security whilst travelling can be the difference between a successful adventure and a nightmare abroad. Use a VPN, keep up safe browsing habits, use up to date software and make use of 2FA to keep yourself protected as you explore the world.
