Shipments done by Travellers

Had problems with these guys. Initially they quoted on the bike. I dropped it off and showed them how I wanted it packed. They agreed with my measurements - all is good (I think). Go back to uplift Carnet. This is delayed, although I manage to get it back the morning of my flight out after much complaining. The bike is in a box about 2x too big with airbags around it. Suggest that this isn't needed. Lucky I did, as I receive an email on rtn to UK saying the box is bigger than they expected, so I owe and extra $180US. After much haggling, we agree that I will pay half of this amount. UK end, I get sent incorrect forms (import of motor vehicle into UK from outside EU). I query this but am assured this form will suffice. Bike arrives in UK. Am then told I need to fill in other forms for customs (return of UK motor vehicle from outside EU). This delays my uplift of the bike by 1 week. In the end I got the bike back 4 weeks after it was originally expected to arrive. Not at all happy...

This shipper has some major advantages - price, and all you have to do is drain the gas tank and disconnect the battery - sometimes not even that. However, they dropped at least one of the bikes in the loading process (so leave the boxes on for some extra protection). They also took 3 days longer than promised - this was a problem coming up to Xmas. They'll try for a higher price also - we were originally quoted $450 plus $50 Hazardous Materials, but we knew that others had gotten $300 plus $50 a few days earlier. Luckily there are 10 other companies next door, so you can threaten to ship with one of them.

Very straightforward handling of our case. Jas Jenners is a middlesize company-that means small volume customers as motorcyclists are more welcome than at a huge company. They are specialized in transport from and to Australia and South America. We could store our crate at their place during our stay in NZ. Very helpful people. We managed to pack our 2 KTMs in a crate of 2 cubic m. Weight was 460 kg

I crated (2.4 m3)the bike myself. A truck picked it up at my place and drove 300 km to Gothenburg. ECU-line have an office in Santiago and some people in Valparaiso who told me where to go and what to do. The price includes transport from my house, shipping, insurance, all costs in harbours. Everything I had to pay until I could start my trip in Chile. The shipping took 37 days.

We went straight to Garuda Indonesia Cargo office at the airport (Domestic Cargo Terminal). They quoted us a price of 9.18 USD/kg!!! which is the nominal air-cargo rate to Auckland. They told us it was their standard policy to charge the nominal rate for 'Dangerous Goods'. Singapore Airlines wasn't taking any Dangerous Goods Cargo and Qantas (also at the Domestic Cargo terminal?) didn't (temporary?) accept any cargo from Bali anymore after the 'Bali explosion'.

At Qantas they were very friendly and made a phone call to Mr. Yuli of Garuda after which Garuda was charging us suddenly 4.28 USD/kg, the right charge (take a look in the IATA cargo rate book!). All shipping agents we asked based their quotations on the 9.18 USD/kg rate, some up to 11.50 USD/kg!!!

We had to crate the bikes (half open boxes are fine) and contacted a shipping agent to arrange this but he did an absolutely lousy job. The (independent) crating company was fine and it works fine if you drive your bike into their factory so they can customize the crate to minimal dimensions. Don't make the crates too heavy! Because the charges in Denpasar are in USD (cash only!), paying in IDR in expensive because of the 'IATA'-exchange rate which is 7% above the 'Street'-exchange rate.

Cargo 774kg x 4.28 USD/kg = USD 3312.72
Fuel surcharge 774kg x 0.05 USD/kg = USD 38.70
Security surcharge 774kg x 0.05 USD/kg = USD 38.70
Airwaybill = USD 3.00
Dangerous goods = USD 20.00
Customs handling = USD 2.00
Total costs paid at Garuda Cargo = USD 3415.12

When we paid we also had to go to MLC which handles the warehousing at the airport and they charged us USD 44 as well. We argued about this with Mr Yuli (Garuda) and ended up in not paying this fee at all as they hadn't mentioned it in our 'All-in' quotation. The crates including transport of the motorbikes to the airport USD 150.

Paid in Auckland: MAF Quarantine Service Inspections NZ$ 47.36 (~USD 24) The (new) Customs building is about 2.5 kms away from MAF and the cargo terminals. The walking takes much more time than the handling at Customs.
