May i add to this discussion the following:
Just been reading a blog of a family who as travelled around Australia, mainly stuck to the cost, only did a couple of inland trips, clocking up 45,000k in 450 days, and they still haven't done 90% of the more advanced 4wd tracks inland... Australia is a big continent, not a country, it takes in most of Europe… If you can only spare 3 months, don't bother shipping your car there and back, it will only make you want to come back and do it 'properly'!
We're taking 18-22 months to get from Melbourne to London, probably skipping Indonesia and instead spending more quality time in the countries we do visit, I agree with everyone else here… a year on the road is not a long time, unless you want to spend it driving all the time…

another 5 eggs worth
I spent 13 months goig to India and back via Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, I stayed 6 months in India. If I had the money I would of stayed longer in every country I went through.
So if you have the money take longer if not do as others have said and see less countries. You will see more in a way. If you only have a year then maybe turn back after 6 months or sell where ever you are at the end of 12 months.

I'm planning a world trip myself and from past experience if you've only got twelve months do less and see more.
Personally i'm not giving myself a limited time(3Yrs ish) but this is due to my own circumstances.
But i i think the whole beauty of travelling is MEETING the places you visit and i don't think you can d that by driving through them.
What ever you decide.
Good luck.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
