Often RHD or LHD bans are for permantly imported vehicles - always ask for clarification in the form of "But this does not apply to temporary imported vehicles" as opposed to "Does this apply to...."
Just a thought....

Dont know how the situation is now but back in 1997 when I entered Saudi there was an old Bedford RHD Overland truck from Encounter Overland as well crossing the border (and allowed in)

I'm interested in this route too - the carnet on a Unimog through Egypt is extortionate. I had heard that the Saudis wouldn't give a transit visa for this trip from North to South as you're likely to be hanging around the port in Jeddah waiting for the ferry so long that you'll run out of visa - they were giving them for South-North travel. This was old news - has someone gone North-South recently that can confirm that this is now possible?
Thanks,
Ian

Have you considered shopping around for the carnet, I gather that the AA in South Africa have been offering 200% carnets - ISTR some threads on it here.

Another thought, take a look at h ttp://www.getjealous.com/getjealous.php?action=map&go=aafricaa - these guys are enroute past Egypt in RHD LCs - an 80 and a 100.
There route should give you some ideas.
