Europe to Nigeria with dog!

Hi. We are planning on overlanding to Nigeria via Morocco early next year. We have been offered a possible job in Nigeria and wanted to bring our Jack Russell dog with us in the Land Rover. We have had a preliminary "ok" from all the usual west route countries (she has a pet passport) but I wanted to know if anyone has any advice/experience with travel with a dog. Particularly regarding border crossing.

Thanks

Hi
We went from France to South Africa last year using the West Route. We met a french-swiss couple Urs and Elza (still) travelling through Africa with their big dog Bayo. They've got a website : http://www.eleex.info
You can ask them your questions

Good luck for your trip

Hi Peter,

my girlfriend and I have just done the same thing, without the dog. We had jobs in Nigeria, so we drove down in our old Range Rover. We spent about a year there.

Two things:

1. If you're going to be in Lagos, it's an incredibly unhealthy environment and your dog will suffer with the heat and humidity - it's unrelenting - let alone the disease's the other dogs have.

2. Is your Land Rover right hand drive? If so, it's illegal to have it in the country. We thought it was just the police trying to extort money (it normally is) but a solicitor friend found out it's true. It's not too much of a problem, but you will get hassle at the *many* police check points and they'll threaten to impound your car - which can always be settled with 500 or so Naira (two pounds). I've just noticed that it says you're in Italy, so you may have a left hand drive.

Not directly relevant to your question, but it may help.

If you have any questions, then send me an email.

B

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
