Namibia, shipping and storage??

Hi All,
Planning to ship my Defender down to Namibia from Europe. Anyone got any good experiences with shipping companies? Cost?

Also, I would like to leave my car there for periods of time while I’m working, is that possible at all? As far as I know no Carnet is needed for Namibia, and most of the southern countries?
Anybody who knows of a good place to store a car down there?
Any info on Namibia will be appreciated, thanks!

Cheers, Ib.

We have shipped our Defender down to Namibia (Walvis Bay ) 4 times now using MACS shipping. They are a german co. and have feeder ships from many UK ports and mainland Europe to their hubb in Antwerp where the containers are transferred to the mother ship. The whole journey takes +/- 21 days. In 2010 the outward cost was £1600 from UK plus port charges in W.B. - £700. The actual shipping costs are based on the $ oil costs on the day of sailing.

A carnet is necessary for shipping into Namibia. I presume as long as that is current the car can remain in the S.A.D.C countries.
I do know of a place in Windhoek where vehicles can be stored.

Namibia is a fantastic country and well worth visiting.

Ask if you need any further information.

Margaret

Hi Margaret,
Thanks very much for the info, good one! I’ll check with the company to find out more. Foley Overland quoted me 1800 Pounds for a shared container with them, also an option. Nice people there, very helpful.
If you do have the name of a storage place, yes that would be helpful also?

Cheers, Ib.

Storage available at Trans Kalahari Inn. It's on the main road from Windhoek to the International airport ( forget the road no !!!) They also have camping and rooms.

Wary about Foley. We are still waiting for a quote from 3 years ago from them !!!!

Hi Margaret,
OK thanks, I’ll find them!
I have actually been quite impressed with Foley, and so far they have given me good service….maybe luck, don’t know.
Got the Carnet sorted, so now I just need to do the shipping.

Cheers, Ib.
