Tips for shipping our camper: Holland -> Argentina/Chile
We (2 adults, 2 kids) plan to start our 6 month trip with our own 4x4 camper in South-America in november 2011.
We want to ship it from Holland(Belgium/Germany) to Argentina or Chile, whichever is the best option.
It doesn't fit in a container, so it has to be a roro-ship.
Due to the short span of time we have, we will not accompany the vehicle on it's sea passage.
Before I get lost on the internet: who can help me out with some information on: - Shipping companies
- Prices
- Agents
- paperwork
- good contacts in South America
- Internet sites
Much appreciated!
Cheers!

RoRo to SA
Hi Corne,
There is pretty much only this liner;
Home Page Grimaldi Freighter-cruises
You can even go with it as a passenger.
Cheers,

Hi there,
Glad to hear you are coming over! Our website has lots of useful info and GPS points for places to stay - especially for when you first arrive in Buenos Aires.
Drop us a PM for more info and we can sort out some waypoints for your GPS unit if you have one.

Maybe someone from the Hubb used these agents?

Another Dutch agent.

Had some contact and correspondence with them last year but we were shipping 6 cruiser so use of containers was much cheaper and that killed the RoRo option but they were responsive and I had a good impression of them.

import BA
Please have them also advise you on the do's and don't on (temp) importation which is not the easiest thing in BA! Certain (food) stuff you are not allowed to import and should not be stored in the camper, no flamables etc. They should also hook you up with trustworthy clearing agent in BA and there are significant cost involved in clearing the car from customs too. There is quit a lot to say on that part.
good luck

Got a quote from Seabrigde. It's the same amout per meter, but they calculate the exact length of the vehicle, in stead of the length per whole meter. Saves me over € 250,- !

Usually RoRo is charged at a CUBIC metre rate, not on the length of the vehicle. Double check as those rates per lineal metre are dirt cheap.
I used Rolf Guenther gmBh out of Bremerhaven to Australia a few years ago, very helpful and professional.

Anybody any experience with Zarate Port in Argentina? According to one of the shipment agencies it's supposedly safer than BA?

zarate
we landed at B.A and had no trouble with the customs. you can park your truck in the buquebus secure car park and walk to hollanda insurance and insure your truck for 6 months for about 200 euros.
if you have gas bottles and they are not in view take them full.
we used a agent in the u.k Pathfinder :: Agents for Safmarine and Fred Olsen Cruises and he was very helpful.
when we shipped it cost us 2100 euros for our truck and was quoted by cubic metre. but we sailed with the truck and just drove off as the truck is classed as baggage.
as for Zarate we have heard of people offloading there but its in the middle of nowhere, and dont go by other peoples phobias you are only at risk of trouble if you have no comon sense. people come over to south america and leave their doors unlocked or locked with laptops+cameras on the passenger seat and then moan if they get them borrowed.
you wouldnt do it in europe.
its great in south america hope you have a great time and for me anywhere their is a toucan guinness cant be far.

Hi Phil,
Coen here. I just read you post. You say you parked the truck in Cuiaba. Do you mean Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil?
If that is so, I hope you do know about the 6 months per year restriction on the paperwork? Or do you have other information than that I am aware of?
Adventurous greetings,
Coen

6 months !
Hi Coen
Thanks for the reminder but yes already a few steps ahead there.
We have parked our truck in Cuiaba, MataGrosso.
Left at the local iveco garage.
Prior to departing we (well the garage actually) made contact with the authorities and we have be granted a 'postponement' of our temporary import due to vehicle requiring unavoidable mechanical repairs (now the last part of that sentence is a slight exaggeration, but the garage were happy to commit that to paper).
For our part we had to prove return ticket had been purchased.
Fingers crossed - nada problemo !
By the way, we also got interviewed for local Brazilian TV show before we left. copy if interested is under the videos section on my webpages.
Phil.
