I have found that bike prices are usually cheaper for second hand in the South Island. Bike prices in NZ are cheaper than most countries due to low tax. There is a good paper called BSE down this way that always has a good selection. Plan on 1/3 of your time in the North and 2/3 down South. You are after the right kind of bike for this country as there are many wonderful track and backroads that are rewarding riding. I have an F650 and an XLV600 TransAlp (TransAlp is for sale, see bikes for sale or email me). Best time of the year? November to April. Around New Year would be the only time you would have to book accommadation or ferries. Free camping is common and back-packer places are cheap and often as good as hotels. Fuel is about US$0.50c per litre. Feel free to ask for more advice and to drop by for a coffee when you come.
Regards
Nigel & Kitty
