I would like to find a used DR650 to buy for a ride around Australia.I ride a DR650 and know them well.Is there a location of one state over another that is prefered? Is there any issues for licenceing and insurance for Canadians? Any suggestions would be great.

Google is your friend. Try "buying a bike in australia horizons". All your questions have been asked and answered before.
Keep an eye on ADV Australia fleamarket thread. Good place for picking up bikes. Or Gumtree and Bikesales.com.au

Avoid buying a bike (or any vehicle) in NSW as they have annual roadworthy inspections and you have to return to NSW to get them done. The other States only have roadworthy inspections when the bike is sold registered, so don't buy an unregistered bike, or a "purchaser to supply RWC" type statement.
You'll need an address, but you can easily use a hotel or hostel address.
Google "buying a vehicle in......." whichever State you decide on and you'll get a step by step guide written by the registration authorities.
Some of the motoring clubs will do pre purchase inspections for a fee, more thorough than the roadworthy inspection.

NSW also has more onerous proof of residency requirements such as utility bills or bank statement to prove your address, whereas some or all of the other states either don't care - and accept any address out of the phone book - or are happy with a receipt from a hostel or caravan park. And they will often accept a completely different address for a postal address including a general delivery post office address.
WA has registration and third party personal liability insurance combined into one payment so that reduces the hassles. Some others have separate private insurers.

OZ bike buy
Plenty of bikes all over the country you will find here:
www.bikesales.com.au
WA is probably the easiest state to register, but on the east coast prices are usually cheaper.
Good luck.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
