I wish we could do something to sort this out, but unfortunately every state is a law unto themselves. I recently discovered three of my own vehicles are not allowed into Western Australia as they do not recognise the Victorian "Club Permit" system for historic cars and bikes. So it's not only overseas visitors that get caught up in this crap.

insurance for all states.
we have been in Australia now for quite a few months after having arrived from East Timor - so we first entered into Darwin.
we have travelled through WA, NT, SA and now NSW.
our insurance is valid for all states.
we got it from: Kings Cross Car Market Online
yeah I know it says car market but they have a page on insurance for foreign reg motorcycles.
we have had no problems and have used it when some idiot hit Simons bike whilst we were parked up. the police were happy with our insurance.
so - have a look. its not the cheapest but seems to take a lot of hasstle out of this registering in each state which is (well in my opinion) a bit ridiculous really.

CdP and insurance
Hello.
The TAC office told me,that the TAC paper was a sort of insurance for the person( just myself, not the bike, and not third party)and only vallid in Victoria,so normally,I schould have get a sort of TAC document in every state, which is only vallid in that state. I travelled in every state, and never get any problems.
So long.
Chris.

This is where I find the whole thing confusing.
Victorian registrations includes a TAC charge for personal injury cover. That TAC cover has reciprocal arrangements in every other state, so if you are injured in another state you still have cover. Hence an overseas registered car/bike with Victorian TAC cover should be just as valid as an Aussie registered one. Unless the policy wording states otherwise.

Hello
I'm sure there is a lonely office clerk at a sad desk somewhere in the basement of a remote dark building in Canberra, whose sole job is to deal with the topic of Compulsory Third Party (CTP) under the Carnet de Passage (CDP).
It's phone has spiderwebs because no one calls, since it's existence is kept secret for unknown reasons and all of us have to guess how it might work out.
So please let's start a search and rescue operation to find this poor clerk so the knowledge can come out of the dark and shine to enlighten us all.

Insurance and vehicle registration is a State matter. The CDP is the only thing vaguely connected to Canberra.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
