Choosing a vehicle and route for 6 months Aus
Myself and my girlfriend as travelling to Aus in March'04 for 6 months and would like any advise on getting a camper (either by buying, renting, leasing) type of camper (bushcamper, hi-top, etc). We have a loose plan to get the vehicle in Sydney and head off along the south in what remains of the nice weather and see some friends in Perth before travelling back via Darwin and Queensland. We are taking some windsurfing and kiting gear which we hope to use on the way and would like to see some dramatic countryside but not too fussed by massive flat desert plains. Again, any thoughts on this would be appreciated

You might want to try Britz - www.britz.com.au - they sell their fully-kitted rental vehicles, including Hi-Top campers and 4WDs.

One of your best bets is to use the local equivilent of the autotrader. There are some businesses marketing specifically to travellers. Also travellers tend to flock to the king cross multi storey where they are allowed to sell their vehicles on one of the floors. The plus side to this is as they spend their final couple of weeks in Sydney, stuck on one of the underground levels, looking at concrete and especially with a distinct lack of buyings, they can become desperate and accept much lower rates just to get some money before they leave. However the main downside to this is you end up with a battered old vehicle that has already been flogged round Australia, possibly not well looked after anyway because most of the travellers are on a very tight budget and don't necassarily know much about looking after vehicles.
Given the proximity of the outback, lots of Australian vehicles are highly kitted up and your better looking for one of these through the motoring classifieds.

start in bondi beach sydney...
every traveller seems to finish off thier journey in bondi and the place is flooded with camper vans for sale, and sometimes very cheap bikes, a word of advice however some of these vehicles have been thrashed so if you dont know much about mechanics approach with caution....

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
