Register an Australian motorcycle in Australia?
I am from Belgium, and want to come to Australia again next year for 6 months. In 2005 when I was there, I bought a BMW motorcycle in Sydney,I went to the RTA for register the bike on my name, and I gave them the adress from the Youth Hostel,as my adress, because I was staying there at that moment,so that was OK for them, and after paying 50$ the bike was register on my name, no problem. Now my question is:If i find a good bike in Melbourne,Adelaide, Brisbane or Perth, how can I register a bike on my name in these places? Is an Youth Hostel adress enough? How much does it cost to register? Hopefully someone can help me outn so I can book my airplane ticket to one of these places.
Thanks for now,and maybe see you all next year.
Chris.

That should work everywhere in OZ...thats exactly what all the Backpackers are doing!

Otpion also in New Zealand
Hello
Its also a Option in New Zealand too buy a local bike as in Australia wether from a local paper or in NZ " Trade me " New Zealands internet e-bay.
Loads of backpackers buy local vehicles and do a very enjoyable trip due too the self drive benefits and cheaper than Europe fuel.
And they must be also using hostel etc address,s.
But some people Will buy lemons as always , so some mechcanical knowledge would be prefered.
In New Zealand we have a vehicle safety test called a WOF ( warrant of fittness) normally costs around NZ$30 for a test ( motorcycle), No one should buy a vehicle without one , preferaly a new one. they are valid for six months and just say they vehicle passed a safe to drive test.
Rego ( registration ) is also required by law in New Zealand which is New Zealands Road user,s Tax. It can be payed for from one day in length to a year in length. A vehicle already been registered by a pervious owner would make life easyier and can only be done when the vehicle has a WOF.
I think its around NZ$260 ? for a whole year.
Third party innsurance isn,t required by law in New Zealand but no doubt again someone will crash.
We have plenty of gravel roads that hire cars are not allowed on. Or there innsurance becomes invalid.
Inexperienced drivers do crash often on gravel roads that don,t exsit so much in some counties.
All this might interest those who can,t afford too hire bikes for much longer lengths of time too really properly see NZ or ship their own bike this far just as in Australia.
I,ve been riding the same two bikes in NZ for 16 years and always register for around two months too a week in when I visit. So I,m behind on buying a Bike.
So hopefully some one else can fill in with more info.
And Besides , breakdowns often provide the adventures one tells other people about. Just have some knowledge.
Just Do the maths.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
