temporary registration NZ
Hi guy's!

We're going to import our german registered bikes to NZ for a couple of month.
Anyone of you know where to go in Auckland and how that works?

Hi, have a look at the NZTA website : Importing a vehicle temporarily (Factsheet 35) | NZ Transport Agency

Also the customs site: Tourist Vehicles

If you don't have a carnet you will need to get a temporary import permit & pay a refundable deposit of the goods & services tax (GST) on the the value of the bikes & shipping. This is currently 12.5% but is soon going up to 15%. I guess being in Oz now you must have a carnet anyway.

The process is reasonably simple and spelled out well in the links provided above. You will have to get a MAF clearance and vehicle inspection, possibly a break cert before even going to the vehicle inspection. Either one of these can cause delays. Depending on how much time you have, you may want to try to get these scheduled ahead of time. It can take several days to get an appointment with a MAF inspector and some vehicle testing stations are faster than others, especially when it comes to bikes. Some don't know much about the process of importing foreign vehicles. It's well worth to send a few emails around ahead of time. Can't give you any specific recommendations for Auckland

Our shipping agent promised us to get the customs and quarantaine appointments .... i hope that works

What about the inspection? Are we allowed to ride our bikes to the inspection Center??? Or how is that working?

In OZ (WA) we had to obtain a 24 hour permit to ride to the testing center (and registration..)
How expensive is a insurance for 1000cc Bike ? Any ideas?
More questions... allways the same...

We will arrive in NZ by mid November and stay to end of jan/mid feb.

You are not really allowed to ride from the wharf/airport to the inspection centre but I have heard of people doing it. I would check with the shipping agent.

For insurance you should email a few NZ insurance companies, I use Classic Cover who are pretty good & cheap. Insurance is not compulsory in NZ.

You are not allowed to ride to the testing center. In my case the AA center bloke was very opinionated about this, recommending a transport company at the same time ;-) Plenty of test centers around.

Looking at the cost of transport, the possible fine, the probability of getting caught, my knowledge of the back roads for the 5 minutes trip - I made my decision.

Re insurance: I assume you are only after 3rd party liability (Haftpflicht) and maybe fire + theft? I second clintnz on 'Classic Cover'. Kiwibike is another one worth checking out. Not sure what the deal is for non-residents and/or temporary import vehicles. May make it more expensive. I suggest to contact the above companies for a quote.

You should check out this Blog Post for very specific recent information on pretty much the same thing you are planning on doing.

Hi there! We are "shipping" our bike from Düsseldorf to AUK in mid September. Doing 2-3 Month NZ and after this going to SEA from there back via Dili to AU in March/Aprill.

How do you ship your bike from Germany to NZ? In-time Hamburg or something else? I guess we are using DHL, 42 days, 1600€ all inlc. Any better option? Please let me know.

No worries!
Yes we shipped with in Time (a friend recomended and used them)
The bikes arrived in time. We had a few time consuming problems with the agents in NZ.

InTime looks actually good, but we decidet to go with DHL, they will deliver DDP in Auckland. So hopefully we will skipp all the stress in the beginning... knock on wood!

leider können wir nicht, im Moment wohnen wir noch in Prag, lösen alles grade auf... am 1+2.9 bringen wir alles was wir nicht verkaufen konnten nach Hamburg zu einem Freund, dann gehts direkt nach D´Dorf (falls wir nikks mehr haben in Prag, wenn doch wieder zurück und noch ne Tour), anmelden bei nem anderen Freund. Bike anmelden, TÜV, Versicherungen, Verschiffung vom Bike, Visas, Carnet, der ganze Papierwahnsinn halt ...

Wo seid Ihr denn im Moment? In D oder noch in NZ?
