I got a few quotes to ship my Serow to NZ last year - £800 was average (one-way).
But I wanted to leave my bike there permanently and concluded it was cheaper to buy a bike in NZ as I have family there.
James Cargo are well known in this field & their quote wasn't much higher than others. I'll try to dig out the other contacts for you

I shipped my Bmw GSA with this guy 2012/2013 return for £1500 which included all the customs clearance and helping to get a Warrant of Fitness (?Bike Test) to drive on New Zealand roads

He basically ships by sea a couple of containers of bikes in Sept/ Oct arriving NZ about 6 weeks later and leaving NZ around March Arriving UK end April/ May.
He also does the same in reverse for Kiwis wanting to come to Euope for the TT or just Touring
I think it was his first year then but the service was fantastic and I thought great value if you are going for more than a couple of weeks.
My daughter has emigrated to there and I suppose will be going again but |I might consider buying a smaller trail bike as there are fantastic off road trails, forest and mountain roads
The first time we went we hired a bike but in the top summer season it is very expensive.
~Having travelled both Islands from top to bottom it has to be one of the best destinations in the world

I,m looking at shipping my NZ bike one way with the guy ( New Zealand motorcycle adventures ) you used , next year.
How close too the date did your bike arrive back in the Uk , too what they said it would arrive?
How long did it take too get your bike out of the container yard too riding off all complete ?

Pretty much on the day it was supposed to to arrive.You could follow the boats progress on a maine tracking website when it was near port and then see its Eta at the next stop. The bike was ready for collection the next day although he picked it up for me.
I would recommend on my experiences.

I'm planning to ship my bike, KTM 990 Adventure, to N.Z. .
Want to do a, short, trip from beginning December till beginning of February.

Got an estimated price from Dutch company "Cargo Masters" for shipment from Rotterdam to Auckland €400 that's one way and only the shipment from harbour to harbour.

As shipping the bike first to the UK is hassle

If anyone has some more info for shipping I gladly hear as also good roads, preferable non-paved, and things to see in New Zealand.

1. the New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas by Peter Mitchell - it lists and maps out all the best biking roads paved and non-paved as well as offering advice for places to stay, cafes etc

2. Mike Hyde's Twisting Throttle New Zealand which concentrates on the lesser travelled roads in NZ & has a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour

I second using James Cargo for shipping. Just give them the bike they do the rest i.e. paperwork, crates etc.

just remember that shipping by sea is very unpredictable time wise and also check whether you can clear the bike yourself or you need an agent in NZ. Those fees can be quite hefty.

Do you need a Carnet for NZ from UK?

Carnet can be used, or a Temporary import permit for which you put down a 15% deposit. More details on the NZ customs website.

I know this is not from UK to NZ but might be useful

Paid $700 USD for the shipping from India to NZ. Most of the shipping price is all the port fees and agro, rather than the shipping element. So not much more to ship from Europe to NZ.


Temporary import cost can be less than 15% if the bike is a certain age (depreciation discount).

I used a shipping agent in India to do all clearance at that end including customs.

In Auckland I did the customs clearance myself.

I had to pay a logistics company to get the bike crate off the container, and into an approved hauliers yard. This cost me $350 NZD.

Went to Customs in town, and paid $40.00NZD import taxes for temporary import scheme (since found out the motorbike has been permanently imported?!). This was cheaper than the 15% GST because there is a discount for depreciation, I listed my bike value as $2000NZD. My carnet had expired when the bike was on the water. Once I'd imported my vehicle here, I sent the NZ import docs off to the RAC with the Carnet and they gave me a little refund.

Once it had arrived in the yard, it would not be released until the biosecurity inspection ($80NZD). This took 24hrs booking time. If you airfreight into the airport, MAFF Ministry for Agg and Fisheries) have a faster turnaround).

I hired a man in a van and collected the bike from the yard.

The took the bike for a Warrant of Fitness (like MOT), $45 NZD, and 1 year Rego cost $110 I think from memory.

I can keep the bike on the foreign plates for 1year, 6 month, so soon I will have to transfer to Kiwi plates in order to keep riding, if I stay here.

My quote from NZ to UK, not including crate and UK clearance is $623NZD
$389 is the actual freight (30 day sailing time which is really quick?!) and $136 origin charges.
