Fuel injection, Dakars running on bad fuel?
Hi
In my many hours contemplating one bike againts another, I have a question which i have not been able to figure out yet; So in come you guys! Situation: halfway across africa, along way from nearest town you start having problems, you have picked up some dirty fuel at your last stop and start having problems with fueling.-dirt. With a carb worst comes to worst you limp to nearest town and take out the carb, Give a good clean change fuel and off you go again. What happens with fuel injection? can they be taken apart fiddled with and cleaned 'by the isde of the road'? I know fuel filters etc will help. However with my rusty fuel tank on my current bike my fuel filter doest stop me keep having so strip down the carbs every couple of months-(on that note i must get my finger out and sort the tank out).
Thanks alot in advance

In my view the simpler and field serviceable systems are better for when you are on your own ( or on local) resources.

My experience is that the fuel filter blocks - you need to carry at least one spare, and know how to change it. Once the filter is changed, you are good to go.
The fuel is pressurised to around 30psi .. that should 'clean' out most obstructions from the injectors .. you can always remove the injector/s - apply fuel pressure and power up the injectors until they 'run' .. would not do it for longer than say 30 seconds .. they can get hot. Most garages will have something for cleaning fuel systems .. you can always use that to clean the injectors - removed fuel from filter - fill filter with cleaner and run as above.. Note that diesels run injectors too .. and they do need cleaning occasional . so a truck service place can clean your injectors ...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
