Fork seal replacement - no seal driver? No problem!

I dunno if this is really a bodge, but I thought I would share. I used this fix when changing fork seals for my 800GS on the road.

Quick tip: if it's not puking (and I mean a large puddle under your bike), you can go really far on it. I recently drove from Victoria to San Francisco with a leaking seal, and there was plenty of oil in the tube when I changed it.

Anyways, you can use the old seal to drive the new seal in. This video shows it off pretty well:
How to replace motocross fork seals without fork seal driver and bullet - YouTube

The gist of it is that you put everything back together until the step where you would use the seal driver. Then you take the old oil seal, cut it in half, file the metal bits down so they won't scratch, and then fit it over the new seal. You should be able to drive it into the outer tube a bit. Then you ram it in there by pushing the inner tube into the outer tube. The dust seal gets kind of a harsh treatment but mine didn't look any worse for wear.

There are thousands of bike shops around the world who do this as standard practice... It's an old trick, but a good one.

I've been using a hard plastic bottle and a hose clamp to make a seal driver. I've also used PVC that was thin enough to hit the seal and not the fork tube

Good tip. certainly looks easier than using a piece of piping (if you can find one the right size that is)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
