Hi Andy
I have a pair of Hogg Microlites which a great. I went for these as they are cooler than the Bandog all weather after tking advice from Altberg. I've used them in some really fowl conditions and they are fantastic. Best boots I ever had for any activity!
I was conserned about them not being water proof but they haven't let any water in yet when I've done stream crossings etc. They come far enough up my ankle to give good protection on the bike but are really comfortable for walking in all day without over-heating.
I would say though that any of the Altberg boots like these are a compromise between walking and biking though. For your Africa trip I'd take a pair of gaters to go over the top of the boot when going through really wet areas (deep pudles etc.) to stop the water going over the top into the boot and then in back country stuff where you get your legs whipped stick a pair of football shin pads on. The combination gives you the best of both worlds.
To sum up - I went with cool boots with room for thick socks when its colder and haven't regretted it for a second. I just use a bigger insole when its warm to stop my foot slopping about in the boot.
Hope this helps
Chris
P.S. The laces never come undone - just double tie them when off road.
