Leather or textile trousers for light offroad?
I have a pair of textile trousers but somehow seem to find leather better - less baggy, better fitting and good against the wind, and yes, leather is hotter but....... is there any good reason not to wear leather trousers on a big adventure motorcyle? Or is it true that 50 million riders can't be wrong and I'll have to stick to textile? And if you are a leather fan (only motorcycle riders need apply) then could you recommend a pair?

Personally I prefer textile as it's lighter, cooler, can keep the water off and dries quicker. No reason why you shouldn't wear leather though, if that's your thing

Leather is optimal for abrasion. But offroad you won't be sliding for 100 feet after you crash at 80mph. Benefits of leather are more limited in offroad scenario.

So I would pick textile with top notch armour for off road.

I wear either, use what you feel comfortable in, leather seems to be out of fashion nowadays.

Textile is just more practical most of the time, especially if you are doing any offroad. First, at slower speeds you need the venting, and then if you have to get off and push, or walk around, or wade across a river, or set up camp in a driving rainstorm, etc. you will not be happy in leather. Also, how do you clean your leather when you are covered with filth in the middle of nowhere? Textile can be washed anywhere in a machine, or even dunked in a stream and hung up to dry in the sun. Also, most leather is not waterproof, so you end up switching back and forth if you're in an area with lots of rain. But, if most of your trip is high speed on the tarmac, the leather makes a lot of sense.

think for travelling textile is better. Weight, ventilation
Our suits have been soaking wet a lot of times, and indeed dry fast. The leather boots stay wet for a few days in the rainy season after heavy rainfall or a river crossing...

I have a really good pair of Dainesse leather trousers that I wear nearly all winter, they are better than my waterproof textiles in the rain and not as hot when I have to stop, I've done some light off road stuff in them and they were fine, I'd wear them all summer as well but they do get a bit hot on really sunny days unless you are really moving but then so are my textiles so I end up wearing kevlar jeans.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
