Worldwide propane, butane and LPG refilling overview
Many travellers get stuck in the jungle of connection systems and adapters for propane, butane and LPG when they try to fill their containers abroad. Systems differ per country and within countries often multiple systems exists. Furthermore travelers need to be prepared for various filling methods such as cylinder filling, automotive filling stations and even gravity filling, all requiring their own systems.

I initiated creation of a document to bring data about connection standards per country together. Here is the link to it.

It is still very much work in progress, so additions and corrections are most welcome!

Not certain how you go shipping these vehicle with gas canisters... I know on the boat from mainland Australia to Tasmania they do something for them .. certainly with the motorcycle they take the gas canister and stove off to some place for storage while underway... might need a few words on that in your document?

Anyways .. For Australia
BBQs have the POL fittings. 'SWAPn'GO' is fairly common around the country BBQ Gas Bottle Sizes - 9kg & 4kg LPG Gas Bottles | ELGAS - LPG Gas for Home & Business.
And then there is the 'campervan valve' ... I think the gas cylinder is the same POL fitting. But I am no expert.

Thanks for the info, I have updated the table with it. The ELGAS site is one of the most informative I have seen so far. Is this "Campervan valve" something specific from them?

I have left any information about installation, safety etc. out of the document, but made reference to some very extensive and thorough other documents. I have focused entirely on connections.

When we shipped our car from Namibia to Uruguay it was stressed that gas cylinders should be empty and the fuel tank almost empty.

The 'camper van valve' .. don't know... but reasoned to be some form of regulator? ... installation looks to be
gas bottle then a
pipe
then the 'camper van valve' and on to the rest of the vehicle.
Probably a safety requirement, I think it is industry wide here so not specific to ELGAS.

I think the ElGAS people got sick of the internet propagated falsehoods and so have their factual website to reduce the number of questions they have to answer. So - a good informative website has resulted.

On the boat from mainland Australia to Tasmania they did not mind what state the bottles were in.. IIRC the motorcycle stoves were put in individual plastic bags and than those were placed in a wire cage on an open deck. They could get some salt spray given the weather. I did not note what they did for the larger caravan/RV bottles, they may have ended up in the same cage.

There are people who do gas bottle refills, but these are now few and far between and hard to find! Most of these will have adaptors for various bottles .. such as primus - used by plumbers etc. for small soldering jobs with a very small bottle.
The 'SWAPn'GO are far more frequent .. every 10th fuel station seems to have them.

Rules for the Tasmanian ferry are that propane cylinders that are properly secured in the vehicle in an approved manner are OK provided they are turned off. Any loose bottles go in the cage.

Major update propane/butane/LPG connections overview
