Blockades in Oaxaca still in effect in some area
Oaxaca continues to see more problems with the blockades by the CNTE group. The federal government is once again increasing their rhetoric about use of force, however the last time it was a no go on their part as they airlifted in supplies to key areas via the military and avoided a confrontation. Few people, unfortunately really understand what is happening with this series of actions by the CNTE and the foreign press only reports a few points. It is a long simmering and very complex situation that has been brought to a boil from time to time. Just a heads up that there are more signals that there could be use of force by the Mexican federal government in coming days. Keep in mind that the CNTE have also maintained blockades from time to time in Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacan, and Veracruz, along with Oaxaca.

Oaxaca blockades important developments
There are 11 blockade points with heavy slowdowns. The federal government has broken off talks with the striking teachers and given an ultimatum of no more dialog until teachers return to classes. The situation was slowly resolving itself until this unexpected and sudden move by the federal government. The federal government has moved 1,600 federales in to reinforce those already there.

Hi, yes, that can be a problem. Most foreign news outlets rely on local reporters these days. They also don't have budgets for long term stories and often, no real interest, either. Very few people actually understand the problem outside of Mexico. The Mexico SCT website will give you road closure info but you have to know how to navigate for it. This is also an example of how well the Mexican government can "censor" a story. It happens all the time and can result in rude awakenings for visitors, unfortunately.

If you want to know about an open road ahead, ask a Bimbo route driver if the road is open and when was the last time he was on it. 50/50 odds he knows.

A clarification to Pancho's info for the total noobs , he is not insulting anybody
BIMBO is the brand of a major bakery and they have delivery vans going to all corners of Mexico . Their route delivery drivers are necessarily extremely well informed about the ways they can get to all their sales points and should have a good idea for possible alternate roads .
Similar advice could be given for the drivers of the other snack food van drivers, Coca-Cola and deliveries .
Some adventuring bike riders will be surprised at how deep into the beyond some of these guys go .

About 3/4 of the teachers are now back at work. Dont rule out other stoppages if the federal government still refuses to negotiate.

The blockades came down a week ago as the particular group of teachers involved decided to take up the federal government's offer of returning to the negotiations if classes resumed. There are threats of more highway blockages, but in Veracruz, as many state government workers have not been paid. The threat of stoppages and slowdowns is in the Xalapa, Veracruz city, and Cordoba-Orizaba corridor. The latter could involve residents of the Zongolica region because of widespread lack of security for residents there. The biggest problem, however, remains the dissatisfied state government workers. Re-routing is not complicated via libre roads which are usually kept open.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
