Cartagena ate Panama City
Hi all,
My wife and i are travelling to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. We are in Lima at the moment and should be in Cartagena by middle June. I would like t ask if you guys know the best and cheapest way to cross to Panama City from Cartagena. For those who want to follow our trip, we have a page on Facebook, COnexao das Americas. Thank you all.

If you have the time to explore, then ride to Turbo and see if you can get the bike(s) on an open cargo boat. It might be your cheapest bet, but shipping from there is less charted...
Getting on a sail boat in Cartagena with a motorcycle is getting harder and harder. The Stalhratte is sailing from Cartagena to Panama on June 22nd. You might find a cheaper way to get yourself and equipment to Panama, but the Stalharatte is a lot of fun, safe, no drama and in a word, reliable. Getting cross the gap is legendary and there are many stories of hi-jinks in the high seas. Captain Lulu operates a large schooner and tour like a well oiled machine. I highly recommend contacting the Stalhratte a.s.a.p. and see if there is room on the boat. Even if they don't have a bunk for you, they may be willing to transport your bike(s) at a competitive rate.

Perhaps cheaper is arranging for a sea container. Get a 20 foot container and sharing it with as many people as possible. If you can connect with someone that want to transport a car, then all the better and the prorated per person costs drop. You will various port and documentation charges , and wait a few days for the boat to be loaded, sail and be unloaded. Also weigh in the cost of flying yourself, taxi (to and from the ports, to and from the airports), hotels while waiting...pretty quickly the all in costs add up.
The most expensive is probably air lifting (again add airfare for yourself.) Air cargo is for people with more money than time.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
