I am about to book a 3 week tour around costa Rica over Xmas where myself and girlfriend hire a bike for 3 weeks.

Looking at tourist guides the cost of hotels seems to be priced at around $60-$100 per night. This is way too expensive and since it is central america I would expect cheaper. Can anyone verify that you can get cheaper accomodation?
The trip is looking to cost a fortune and almost not worth while....


Just looking for a verification on living costs as the bike and fuel is a set price and we know the cost of that. There are activities which cost a fair bit but again there set and we know about them.

Martyn, you are looking in the wrong spot to get yor hotels if you are doing it by internet sites which shout" lowest prices for hotels" .

Having just spent a number of weeks in Costa Rica this past winter ,and previous years , I can assure you that you can indeed find rooms for very much less than $60 per night- that should be your total daily expenditure for everything !The hotels you are obviously looking at are oriented at the big budget fly in tourists who want everything done for them.

The problem you are making for yourself is planning everything in too great detail.Do NOT make plans and reservations to be at hotel A in town B on night X.
Just go to Costa Rica, travel around and when late afternoon comes start thinking about where you might spend the night.
Costa Rica is very tourist oriented and well appointed with many small local town hotels, motels and cabinas. You should be able to find a good place for the night at a cost of well under $20. In cities you should be set up for $20 to $30 . If you like an area and want to stay several days that will let you bargain the price down a bit as they wil have less housekeeping to do.

I suggest you buy the lonely planet or other travel guide. Lots of cheap hostels/hotels all around. A double room shouldn't cost more than $25. Less even. as said the çheap price' website seldom include the cheap hotels.

Oh, don't forget to check the costa rice section of poorbuthappy - a place for travelers and locals.. a cool (new) website with travelinfo

Other tip: reservations upfront is not really necessary, if you stay in hostels there's usually flyers/businesscards of lodging in places you want to go.

i confirm whats mentioned above, it should not cost you 60USD a night. if you're biking then check out the nicoya peninsula. challenging roads and confusing at times but great fun. try to avoid the panamericana, its slow, a pain in the ass to travel on and it feels a little dangerous with all the trucks
