Mexico GPS Mapping Help Wanted

A friend of mine is looking to ride from the USA, down through Mexico and South to Panama, off road as much as possible.
He's struggling with mapping for Mexico, but has come across something called cartografiagps. Has anyone used this and is it any good. Or has anyone done a similar journey and what GPS mapping did you use?
Thanks in advance.

hmmmm

I am a fan of Open Street Maps (OSM.) Can anyone comment on their off road details in Mexico and Central America? I imagine it isn't all there, but that said, someone will post to the contrary.

To further the thread per pinball's original post, here is a link for CARTOGRAFIA GPS :: MAPA E32 : Mapa topografico de Mexico para gps garmin, incluye miles de brechas y veredas, ideal para rutas en cuatrimotos, atvs, racers, 4x4, out doors, off road : HOME I dunno, it look s good to me.

Back for a moment to OSM, if you record new roads, typically unpaved, then do upload them to OSM. I extended the road that start in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, and added a few side roads. It is very cool to see the roads (and road extensions) propagated around the Internet. Google Maps leverages OSM. You too can be a contributor!

For driving most parts offroad i suggest to use high resolution satellite imagery, togehter with Roadmaps overlay.

With an iPhone or iPad and the MotionX-APP you can download big areas of Google and Bing Road, Satellite or Terrainmaps or use directly the hybrid maps.

Another interesting source is to download the Navtec Road / Satellite / Hybrid Maps from Nokia Ovi for Offline usage.

Here you find more about: 4x4tripping: Offroad Navigation with MotionX

We did our Transafrica with that equipment. If you go by bike you need to use a special case for the safety of the expensive Device i guess..

I (will do) have done a special Topic at HuBB about this solution....

Thank you for the advice and comments.
My mate has now purchased the Cartographia maps and is using these in conjunction with Google Earth/Maps to plan his route.
Having had a look at the maps, they are pretty detailed.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
