Quick Question for Hmorro or any other Mexicanos

Ola Companeros,

Que tal?

Do I need to have a Mexican address/residency/anything to buy and register a bike in Mexico?

Gracias,

Dan Walsh

Hi Dan.
Hasta donde yo se no necesitas ningùn documento para comprar una moto en mexico que no sean los billetes para pagar, para el registro creo que si es necesario comprobar un domicilio en la localidad donde quieres registrar el vehiculo.

Saludos.

Hi, Dan.
Acording to my knowledge, you don`t need anything else than money in order to buy a motorcycle here in Mexico, however I think you will be asked to give an adress in order to register it.

Regards,
Edgar

You may have to show an immigration document FM2 or FM3 to be able to register the bike. I have always been asked for one. These documents show that you are a legal resident in the country. You can always fix things up someway and you may need to hire the services of a "gestor" who will arrange everything for you. It may depend on where you buy the bike the smaller the city probably the easier it is.
My question is why you would buy a bike here and not in the States?

If yiou need more help send me an email,

Dan:
No problem, you can buy it and get a license plate with just a single phone bill and your ID, normally the bike dealer will take care of the tramits, they have their own "gestores".
Bikes here are more expensive than in the US, maybe only BMW are a little closer to US prices, maybe 10% more.
If there is anything else that I can help with, drop me an e-mail.

Gracias. Looking to buy a bike in Centro America in the next couple of months (2nd hand Honda XR650R, Yamaha WR450 or similar, if anyone has any clues), may extend my search into Mexico, just wondering if there were any particular problems.

Suerte, Dan Walsh

Wot happened to the Dakar? Hope its stil
on its wheels........sounds like a story there?

Why not approach one of the American mags, maybe they can blag you a new
bike for a few lines? God knows they
need some inspriration! (they know your
work)

Not many guys on the bikes you request
get that far south. Those are Baja bikes mostly. But you may find one or two in the
capital cities or Mexico City, but not many.

But if you can get up to San Felipe (Baja)
you'll see those bikes everywhere, all Gringo owned of course, but someone is
always selling.

We really miss your musings in BIKE.
The punk who's taken your place is
worthless.

Cheers and
que le via bien!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
