Hi Olesia!
I´ve worked in Cuba for a year some time ago(no, not as volunteer, but for a touroperator) so I know a bit about Cuba, it´s not possible to rent a bike in Cuba, you might try to rent one from locals but I´m not sure they are willing to risk it, and it certainly would be illegal, but some would do anything for dollars...
I´ve read somewhere about a guy that had taken his BMW into Cuba on a sailing boat, he wrote a book about it (I think it´s published by National Geographic) But it´s not very easy and certainly not very often that this has been done, ask the cuban embassy, they might know or probably just say no. There are lot´s of Ural in Cuba but most are state property(secret police :-) or belong to companies.
Good luck,
Warrd

I know it is no substitute for a real bike but...........
There are plenty of scooter rentals available, particularly in Havana, Varadero etc. Where package tourists go, you can always find a 50cc scooter. Rentals were not cheap however. From memory in excess of US$20 a day.

Hi there. I tried to rent a bike by asking nearly everyone I talked to for about 10 days. I got all sorts of promises and was lead on some merry dances thru some of the seedier parts of Havana and made to wait in shop doorways and street corners; I had promises "Meet me here tomorrow at 11" etc, all no-shows, but the closest I got to getting a bike was from a local in Trinadad (south west coast). He said i could use His MZ150 for a couple of days but I had to tell the Police he was a friend. Anyway, much to my surpise he was there in the morning as planned with the bike with less than a liter of fuel so I rode to the station and filled it up. You had to use US$ at that stage for fuel so I guess that was one of the reasons he was happy to lend it to me. On the way back to the guesthouse (three blocks) the clutch cable broke. It took me about an hour to find him again, and after half a day of searching the whole city, we could not find a new cable, or repair the old one as it had been repaired so many times already, even though MZ was the most common brand of bike. I gave the bike back to him, he gave me the money back and went off with a full to the brim tank. Technically I did ride a bike in Cuba! That really sums up my Cuba experience. Hope you have better luck!
Regards
Nigel in NZ
