Last week we rode our two KLR's south through Nicaragua, crossing at the El Espino border (three hours). We overnighted in a very quiet and secure Granada (Hotel Casa del Agua), and crossed into Costa Rica at the Penas Blancas border (3+ hrs) the following morning. At no time did we come across any difficulties or issues. Gas stations were open, no road blocks, most hotels were operating, and there was no overt displays of military or police presence.
Nicaraguan Immigration did contact our planned hotel in Granada to see if we were actually booked there, so ensure you have a plan in place.
We met three other adventure riders heading south as well, all with similar experiences.
