San Antonio to Mexico Crossing Advice Jan 2015
Hi, my wife and I are shipping our bikes from Seattle to San Antonio in January and are going to explore the central highlands south to Oaxaca and into Guatemala if we have time and don't get too distracted. We have 5 weeks for this trip. Last year we explored the central highlands after entering in Nogales. Looking at a map it seems like a faster way to get to Zacatecas (a city we loved and want to return to) is to cross the border near Laredo. We've ridden Mexico every year for the past 5 years but have never been to this part of the country. Any recommendations for a border crossing south of San Antonio? I also like to have a plan for our first night stay after crossing the border, somewhere motorcycle friendly that is far enough south to get away from the border frenzy. Any recommendations? Somewhere near Monterrey? Any not to miss roads in the area? I was checking out some routes east of Saltillo, through the mountains/canyons. Any recommendations there?
On this trip we are trying something new, instead of my KTM1190R and Deby's G650GS we are travelling on matching Yamaha WR250R's. I just returned from riding the Trans American Trail on my WR and loved it for 6,000 miles. I thought it might be fun to try a smaller bike in Mexico. Even though we are on highly capable offroad bikes we are not really looking for the hard-core offroad routes, just looking to explore the area. Besides Zacatecas we hope to return to Guanajuato, San Miguel and Patzcuaro. The plan is to return north, cross in Nogales and find a place to store the bikes until we can come back and ride the southern part of the Continental Divide Route. Thanks in advance for any help...
