Trusted mechanic in southern Mexico?
Hey all,
I am traveling with south along the Pacific coast in Mexico with a buddy on a couple of Yamaha WR250Rs, with the intent to continue through Central America and beyond. We haven’t had any major mechanical problems so far (knock on wood), but want to keep it that way. So we’d like to have a good mechanic take a look at the bikes to make sure that we, a couple of guys with no mechanical experience to speak of, haven’t overlooked any actual or potential problems with the bikes. We’re tentatively planning to head through Oaxaca (city) and then through Chiapas on our way to Yucatan. If anyone has had any good experiences with a quality mechanic in these areas (especially one familiar with adventure/overland travel and/or Yamahas) we’d be grateful for a recommendation!

No takers yet on an address , and sorry , I won't be giving a specific mechanic either. But that should not be a big problem . The WR250 is a basic design and in a size which is popular in Mexico so just about any Yamaha dealership and bike repair shop in the bigger cities should have no difficulty with working on it , if required. avoid the Talleres de Moto where the sidewalk is lined with partially assembled bikes and scooters.
Oaxaca city has an official Yamaha store , maybe two .So does Merida.
Really if you are keeping an eye on the engine oil level and the wear onthe brake pads , sprockets and chain wear and getting regular oil and filter changes as per your owners manual you should be trouble free.
Even if you have limited( or none at all) mechanical skills now is the time to begin gaining familiarity with those things .
Read your owners manual and you can build from there.
If you don't have a manual check out this one on line .

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
