waterproof laptop case

I had a bottle of water get squashed in my topbox last week and discovered just how little of my gear was waterproof.

So, to start with the most expensive item that needs better protection, what do you folks recommend for a 13" Macbook? A small size case is important. The only extras I need to carry are charger and small bluetooth mouse.

Can't beat plastic bags

I put everything in my top box that needs to be really waterproof into a garbage/trash bag. It can be folded over at the top so it is not a pain to get into. Anything that may spill or whatever stays outside the bag. If you just want a couple of items to be waterproof smaller bags or freezer zip locks or similar. Cheap easy effective.

I got a heavyweight poly bag, folded the laptop into it then put it into a slimline laptop bag. Worked well keeping dust and moisture out. Not fully submersible though, I'd imagine!

Remove battery

I think one cheap trick you can do is to remove main battery from your laptop when in transit. Then even if you computer gets some water it will not burn down immediately.

Laptops

I think the best investment is an otter box, they have a complete range. I have the small PDA box, which I use for either a tom tom or PDA, its 100% waterproof and in normal use indestructible, their add shows a hummer driving over it... its also US Army approved... I fill mine with insulation and never had a problem. Should also add its dust / sand proof.. look at Otterbox at OtterBox.com: Otterbox, Waterproof Boxes, Waterproof Box, Waterproof Plastic Boxes, Waterproof iPod Cases

You can also buy something a little bigger than the device and keep everything together ….

Salut Matt

I use something made by exped which uses the same 'roll to fit' mechanism they have on their bags. It also has padding in it and has served well for many years. It *just* fits the 17" powerbook/macbook pro. I don't know what the model is called, but it shouldn't be hard to find. I got mine from TravelDri-Plus if that helps.

100% water and dustproof even if you drop it in a river. Don't ask how I know

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
