Delorme 2 way Satellite Messager

First hands on: InReach satellite Messager

InReach

The InReach Satellite Messager has arrived, and it was time to try. As European buyers it was not so easy to buy the Messager, i had to import them from the US.

This Device allows to send / receive Emails, SMS over a satellite Network. So it dont need cell phone coverage. And it allows livetracking over a web portal. And you be able to send a SOS Message directly to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center, and to communicate with them.

The satellite Messager

The Earthmate app for iPhone / Android

Quickly he was unpacked and installed the associated app from the AppStore. After the Messager was "paired" with the iphone (bluetooth), it first had to do a firmware update, and Delorme to create an account - and select the appropriate subscription.

The various subscriptions

Then you can connect with the Messager also, as desired and send messages, blog posts by email, or direct emails. . Answers can only be done within the website of Delorme

The link will be added to the Email, News, or SMS.

This looks like a very satisfactory solution - the use compared to "spot" the much better Iridium Satallitennetzwerk. Together with the subscription, but it is also the more expensive solution. For testing purposes, the live tracking enabled, and you can check my current location:

You be able now, to download topo and road maps for Offline usage into the Earthmate APP. That was a very interesting part.

You can read more about in my Blog.

Unfortunately i have to do an Update of this review.

- Lifetracking is fine
- Two way Messaging is fine

To download Maps - we have to discuss.

The earthmap App allows to download maps - and what kind of maps - differs for the continents.

Therefore we will cross africa - we hoped to get there too a additional mapssource.

After 3-4 GB of Downloads, there are still no detailed informations about Kongo at sample.

The details are so less, that i would say: completely rubish

But for other locations, at sample the us, there should be much maps and terrain maps for downloading (not testet).

The Device did a good job during our transafrica.

We use it mainly for live tracking, as trackrecorder and to sent short messages over the satelite Network each night.

Never had problems. It eats batterys, but we use reusable one. In the meantime you can order too a 12v plug for the car.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
