Mitas E07 or E07dakar

Hi all tire experts,
This summer we going 2up through Russia, Stans and Mongolia. Bike- SuperTenere 1200.
After picky validation is chosen Mitas 07.
Only thing is, I can not decide if I really need Dakar version.
What is advantages and disadvantages between those two versions and what shall be better for me?

As far as I'm aware, the Dakar version is more hard wearing. I guess this might also mean it would take more effort to get off the rims, if the heidenau is anything to go by! It would also depend on what sort riding you might intent to do. If you were to go off road at all, I'd consider the dakar. When I go to Morocco, I'd use the dakar for peace of mind.

I believe the Dakar E07 has an extra ply (4 ply vs 3 ply) and is more hard wearing for rocky terrain so more protection for tears and rips. Whether or not, or how much, difference this makes I don't know. What I do know though is that one of the chaps who does the Sibirsky (TeeBee on ADVRider) Project uses them and if they're good enough for him then they're good enough for me.

Price wise is almost identical, I've just bought a pair of the E-07 Dakars for my Mongolia trip later this year. Fitted the front 21 inch at home (with tube) easily enough with my novice skills. I'll be fitting the 17 inch rear in the next week or two. If I can fit them, anyone can.

Just to add, I fitted the front with the same equipment I would have on the trail. That's a pair of motion pro combo spanners and a set of Motion Pro Bead Brakers/Levers.

13000kms in Africa so far on E-07 Dakar rear and a ton of tread still left to go. Great tyre.

Modman, how was the rear to fit?

I'm thinking of these for my trip.

Might go for the Dakar front, and standard rear, since rears are usually more of a pain.

IIRC only the sidewalls are stiffer on the Dakar, so you're not getting any extra tread life from them.

The rear wasn't too bad to fit but definitely harder than a 'normal' tyre. The front was easier to fit.

That was my understanding too, after researching the standard vs. Dakar E07s a few months ago.

I went with the standard E07 rear. One thing I couldn't figure out is whether the stiffer sidewalls on the Dakars might present some issues when airing down for offroad / sand.

I rode a set of the Dakar's up to Alaska, around the state, and back. Little over 10,000 miles. Once they get worn in, they do great on dirt, asphalt, and light mud.

I used a Dakar rear and standard front on my 1100GS. Would go with Dakars both ends next time because I felt that the stiffer sidewall would protect the rims when I aired down.

I had tkc80's on my BMW 1150 that worked great on a tour around Europe with a 36 hour enduro in between, a friend from Norway that I met on route had the standard 07 on his ktm 1190 adventure, after about 3000 miles on his tyres they look as good as when he first put them on, looked like a nice tyre and they handled well, I'm stuck in my ways I like the tkc 80's.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
