Sleeping mat - EXPED Downmat 7 dlx

I've filmed a review of the EXPED Downmat and uploaded it to YouTube - I'm thinking of doing more of these.... what do you think?

Well done.
It would've been nice to also show a foot pump, its size, and how quickly it filled the mat.
I've been looking at the 9DLX, but haven't sprung for one yet.

Cool! You are a natural mate! Lots of info. too. much better than reading through a dry report.

Exped down mat

Greetings all. Don't weave and wobble. If you can afford one, and are partial to a good nights sleep, the exped is worth every penny. I have used mine for a year, with four season camping, and apart from fumbling inflation technique, it has worked perfectly. For rough ground, roots etc I use a closed cell mat underneath to avoid punctures. I'm sure you could use much thinner packing material, but I haven't tried that. It does slide around on snow without a "dimpled" mat underneath, but on the other hand it would probably float if you were flooded. In summer the exped was also comfortable, without overheating me.

Cool - thanks guys :-)

I may do some more then.... next up the Tranja I think.

The EXPED is without doubt the best sleeping mat I've ever used - I took much persuasion to go for the 7dlx rather than the 9dlx - but frankly I simply didn't believe the 7 would be deep enough for such a large chap - but it's just right - a good balance between comfort and packing up space... not to mention how much more pumping the 9 would need.

The foot pump is missing from the report because they've only just released it and I haven't got hold of it yet... just looked at it on the sites it's been announced on.... but the order is in!

When on your side, do your hips or shoulders touch the ground with the 7?

Vary good review. Much more informative than a typed out one. Seeing a item being used helps me more than the instructions.

To borrow a saying from the UK.

That's exactly what I was worried about - but no not at all - as long as it's inflated correctly I don't touch the floor.... that knees / hand thing really works - it's so comfortable.

@DLbiten - thank you

In stock now..

Nice Vid Matt,

The trick is to not under inflate or over inflate the mats, if you have em too hard it can be as bad as having them too soft. For me with my 9 down mat, I fill it till its just firm and can be folded in half end to end with ease.. that does me fine. Can take a couple of tries to get it to the right point first time, but since I did been the best matt I have had.

And I have a few in stock at present, came in on friday. Grab them whilst you can, they tend to go very quickly.

Hi Mat,
The larger gentelman makes a good video, informative with a easy manner, I like your style.

I watched the travel exhibition review as well, at the time I thought what a good idea for the UK HU meeting at Ripley this year, loads of material for you there.

Keep up the good work

Steve

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
