But it's true about how big, loaded up boxes can affect handling. Add up all the extra weight ... BEFORE ... you put all your junk in them. Something to think about when trying to wrestle the beast up out of the Mud or lifting on the downhill side trying to go UP.  Can you say permanent back injury?
For road riding only the big boxes are OK ... if the bike can handle it. If suspension is set up for extra weight and the frame and sub frame can handle it. Not bad.
I'm pretty sure the main reason riders go with big Alu boxes has to do with security, real or imagined. Even if they know those locks are not thief proof ... it's the perceived feeling of security that sells them.
Also consider IMAGE ... and that the big boxes look super Butch and give a perfect place to display the dozens of country stickers, slogans, HU and sponsor logos travelers collect.
