110 suspension

I would like to fit out my 110 with complete Old Man Emu suspension, but this is exspensive. What about OME shocks with Britpart Performance Yellow springs?
Is there any other, cheaper, set up that will last a drive through africa?
Is an upgraded steering damper really worth it?

I think we've been here before...I would always suggest Land Rovers own springs and shocks. Never a problem, simple design and modestly priced! Use the 110 hardtop ones at the blunt end and std or hd (more ground clearance) at the sharp end. Std shocks. Use dual coils at rear (from 130) if you lean too much on bends, but expect a harsher ride. That's my opinion, I have this set up and never any problem. OME, dunno...

On all LR's with OME shocks I got a cross, the shocks where leaking by the time they reached Ghana. You're dealer back home might be able to relace them... . Nice, with at least half Africa between you and your dealer.

LR springs and shocks are fine, and even with a spare set you're only at half the price of an OME set. I used inflatable helper springs in the back. I was really satisfied with them.

The great upgrade debate:

The reason all these widgets, toys, lifts, tucks and shocks exist is because the base vehicle doesn't do what this or that owner wants it to.

Your LR was perhaps designed for farmer Brown and his bale of hay, but it was designed as a complete system.

OK there are tons of compromises made in the name of economy but adding stiffer this, or faster that only transfers the load to another part of the ensemble.

The max load of any P/LG is way beyond its long term running load, travel light, fit new OE shocks and take the old ones as spares.
If you blow the new ones you're driving too hard for an overland trip and the rest of the vehicle is also suffering.

Only HGVs are designed for full load full time, and even then the driver behaviour accounts a lot for the life of a vehicle.

All IMHO of course but I spend a lot of time farting aroung dimensioning bits of cars for the "average" or "target" user.

Talking of upgrades - has anyone got any opinions on overdrives for 300 Tdi 110....can't always discipline myself to drive at 65, so feeling the need for longer gearing. Any opinions on reliability, which make etc. Someone mentioned Rocky mountain version as being ok. Thanks in advance,

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
