Another good tip was: I mounted my solar panel on my roofbox lid (See page 133 of Sahara Overland II). It's bolted in securely. When I unpadlock the lid, it can be taken right off and placed in the sun if you are parked in the shade.
To get around having to then have a really long wire to allow this I bought some fish tank electrical connectors (waterproof) from Beal . So the cable to the battery has one of these inline near the panel.
So when I want to do this, I unclip the wire, take the panel and place it in the sun, and then I have an extension cable to put in place using the same fish tank connectors at each end.
