Bradt Africa Overland (4th edition)
I stumbled upon this book recently. It says 4th edition, but I have never seen a guide by Bradt called "Africa Overland" before. Is this perhaps the updated version of the famous "Africa by road" book(which is badly outdated by now)? It is very recent: july 2005
The book was in a plastic cover so I could not look into it. Anybody got it?
I might be interested in buying it if it contains similar, but correct, info as africa by road.
Author: Siân Pritchard-Jones & Bob Gibbons
July 2005
4th edition
304 pages · 8 pages colour photos · 53 maps
ISBN: 1 84162 135 8

I dont know about the book you describe but I used their guide to Mali a few years ago and was impressed.
I'd be wary about a book which tries to cover too much unless you are just looking to use it for planning purposes. Once you've got the bascis it pays to do a lot more research.
If you are planning your own overland exped (using a motor vehicle) the bible, as far as I'm concerned, is Tom Sheppard's book - Vehicle Dependent Expeditions.

This book is a bit lightweight for real independant travel. I think Chris Scott's book is very good, (better than Tom Sheppard's book - Vehicle Dependent Expeditions which is just too LandRover heavy).
Search the web for the diaries of people who've done it/ or are doing it.

I have to agree with Jeremy,
CS has it well covered.
In those boring work moments leading up to departure (as you reduce the work load) it's very useful to learn from other peoples mistakes/experiences. www.africa-overland.net regroups a lot of travelogs.
You could even download the sites for later consultation on the road with one of those little freeware programs.
Happy planning

Have only flicked though it myself but I talked to someone the other day who'd just bought the new edition - having had the previous one - and they were disappointed that very little appeared to have been updated.
But, considering the nature of the area it has to cover, that book is never going to be up to date enough. Must say 16 quid for 300pp is a bit much too. Luckily we have the internet...

Guess I'll leave it at that then, and trust on good ol' hubb for my trip info.

Well you may as well cancel Xmas now and send the reindeer back out to pasture - but think ahead to the New Year when DD2 is out! Click the cover on my website - there's a competition for free copies. (just give me a couple of mins to think one up)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
