Bringing pajero 2.5 tdi to the desert

Hi all

I'm thinking about bringing my '99 Pajero into the desert. It has the 2500cc engine with turbine and intercooler.

Are there any travellers out there that have had trouble with fully loaded pajero (+600kg) like mine in the sands of North Africa?

Do you have any tips and tricks you can share with me.

Jakob

Hi Jacob
I took my a 1988 Pajero (same engine) through which weighed 2.5 tons with full fuel and water tanks, only problem was back end sinking in soft sand, but after practice this happened less often, and 4 sand ladders and a shovel soon got us going again. Apart from that no major mechanical problems.
Have fun

hi Bruce

Good to hear you didn't have much trouble. One question for you. What was the size of your tires? Would you have used wider tires, knowing that the car would sink in soft sand.

And one more. Did you do any dune driving or was it mainly on tracks.

I had General Tyre AT 7.50x16 which were excellent(only one puncture driving to Benin and back) We spent a week in the dunes and six months on roads/tracks so I think for the sake of fuel economy I would use XZY or similar that can run at high pressure on road and low off.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
