A "clonk" sound in central diff TLC80 auto
Bonjour ladies!
That "clonk" sound happens when I shift -kindly- from D to 2nd orjust when in D when accelerating a bit suddenly.
It sounds as it comes from central diff. We have checked P. Shafts, U.J., front and rear diff and all seems pretty fine considering the hdj 80 is 1993 and got over 250K.
Any ideas ? Is it a "normal" thing to happen to a 80 that age?
It has been that way for more than 2 years but I think it's time to check on it.

Most landcruisers at that milleage have a "cloink".
Output shaft on the gearbox. The effect is possibly exagerated by additional play inside the diff (planetary gears).
I have no idea about automatics, so I can be very wrong ofcourse.

First, check the free play in the front and rear driveshafts with the center diff unlocked, then locked.
Try driving a little bit with center diff locked. If on pavement go in more or less straight line.
If you still can't isolate it remove the rear driveline, check the u-joints, check rear diff for free play, also try drivng with center diff locked and see if it goes away.
Put the rear driveline back and do the same with front driveline.
You should be able to isolate it.
If you do all this and need advice, please post.

I'd agree with 2cvFred. Just wear in the transferbox and/or mainshaft.
Not much you can do other than take it all apart and replace the worn parts.
Be gentle with it and it might last another 250,000 miles (or 250 miles!)

Honestly.... I don't wanna talk about the war, but ... my 1962 SII Sollihull friend has not those problems after many years of farm work and some hot emotions in the sands, winds and stars of the Sahara.

Your 1962 Series II has so little power it cannot damage anything!
There are sometimes advantages for less power. Less wheel spin, less stress, less fuel used, etc...

Yes, M37Charlie, the clonk sound does come from the center like the Transfer-box.
Does it mean it's very expensive to fix ?
Anybody happens to know where can i buy the parts?
I do normally buy from Milner off-road (there is an add in Sahara. Overland)
but they don´t seem to carry those parts.

less fuel used ?? Not really, full load in sand the 80 is MUCH more economical.

Parts are not that expensive to replace. It's the labour. The gearbox has to come out and be opened.
Thing is, once the gearbox is out and open, you will probably want to replace all the bearings and possibly other things that show wear. After all you do not open it every day. And while the gearbox is out, you might even swap the clutch at the same time. Add all that and yes, it is very expensive.

I took the vehicle to two different mechanics and as you guys say it's nothing to worry about, a normal thing with more than 200 K on the clock.
I got the car with the originals 285 --used in this part of the world-- but I prefer to use the good old 750 which are probably easier for the vehicle and it feels also a bit lighter.
