Apart from all the pro's and con's for Diesel; if you are planning to travel through Africa I suggest you use campingaz equipment. You can fill up almost everywhere (Cairo, Luxor, Khartoum), or even better, change you bottle (like we did in Dar es Salaam for Example).
Further south you can also consider to cook on wood/charcoal, most of the time available for free. Try to get one of these storm kettles to boil all your water, that will save a lot of gas.
Our consumption was like 2.75 kg gas per 6 weeks (2 persons, cooking something like 5 to 6 times per week).
