Engine cooling
I've always had a problem with my 3.0 TD 4Runner overheating at the GVM or when towing long distances. Now I went to see a chap at the weekend and he's going to rebuild my radiator and add a couple of extra cores (from 3 to 5 core). Still waiting for a price though.
The other thing I was going to do is fit an electric PACET extractor fan to the bonnet - now can anyone tell me anything about these fans or about any other ways of keeping your engine from overheating?

Enzo,
If the belt driven fan can't cope with the engine heat, fitting a Pacet or any other electrical fan as an extra cooling source will make very little difference. The problem seems to lie with the efficiency of the heat exchange system. If coolant can't pass freely through the engine block or the radiator, the problem is going to get gradually worse, regardless of the number of fans.
There's a good website explaining the working of automotive cooling systems:

Thanks Roman - how can one check for blockages in the internal system of pipes etc? Or is it only possible by taking the head off etc?
By the way, did you ever get the split rims you were after?

Enzo,
No need to take the head off. If you are getting persistent high temp problems, have a garage flush the engine block & radiator. At the website I mentioned you can find some pictures ("Horror Stories") showing what you can find inside the rad and block. Enjoy!
Less likely cause is a collapesed coolant hose, but worth checking anyway.
Re split rims - I gave up the idea as they are impossible to balance, hence useful only at low speeds.

The other thing you can do is install an aluminium radiator.
Heat transfer from aluminium is better
OK - so its not cheap ! (ball park 500+ quid)
It would also be worth replacing your hoses aswell if they are a bit old

Yep, fitted a reconditioned rad and changed top and bottom hoses, rad cap and thermostat about two years ago, didn't solve the problem though, so I am hoping this will:
Got the quote in on my new rad (currently 3 core but is being enlarged to 5 core): £400 inclusive of all parts and labour (please shout if you know someone who can do it cheaper!). So as soon as I get my spare car, "the skedonk" back on the road, I'll drop my truck into the shop.
Good thing you brought that up as I thought all rads were aluminium nowadays - I'll check with the guys sorting mine out. I look forward to doing a major trip soon and the last thing I need is to crack the head again especially if I am lucky enough to be stranded in some God forsaken backwater of post-colonial Africa with only an old Engel and a few crates of between me and an insane flush of freedom surging through my chest!

Hi Enzo
Have a chat with Andy at Allisport ( www.allisport.com) about ali rads - he builds them for all sorts of folk including the rainforest challenge and Paris Dakar vehicles (and he's a good mate of mine)
Yeah - love to get together - but you'll have to be quick as i'm off to North Africa for 2 months after the weekend, or I'll catch you later this year
Oh and I'm meeting Darrin and the Yak-mobile out there too
