We ended up buying a new gas burner each time we changed gas bottles. Whilst it can be possible to get gas bottles refilled in different countries, it gets quite difficult as they use different fittings. However most of the countries have variations on cooker heads that screw directly on to the top of the gas bottles. These work out at about £5 - £10 and it was easier to get rid of the gas cooker we took from the UK and use these cheap cooker heads. However having done the trans africa trip, I think a significantly better approach is to use a multi fuel stove that can burn petrol. You can get it everywhere for a cheap price. You don't end up trawling through markets trying to find the gas heads. We also cooked on to charcoal which was easy to find. Downside is that we ended up having more kit that strictly needed so we could cook on two or three different methods.
