hidraulic winch
Hi
I am thinking of getting a milemarker 9000 hidraulic winch for my defender 90 Tdi.
Has anybody tried this winch? what about the defender's hidraulic pump? Will it handle the winch?
opinions welcome!!
Thanks,
Renato

Hi
No the defender pump is not really up to it
It cannot provide the pressure or the flow to run a milemarker well - it can be tweaked but it still doesn't get it up to full pressure
They are good winches though so it is worth investing in another pump to run the winch
A ZF can be mounted with its own fluid etc.
checkout the winch section on www.asenseofadventure.com (we are resellers for milemarkers so must confess an interest)

Richard,
A bit anoraky, I know, but it's the flow rate not pressure that matters in this case. Just look at the size of the P/S fluid reservoire.

Renato,
It's a ZF74 pump. Talk to Allan Byrne on http://www.4x4winches.com/ and he'll give you all the info you need. He will charge you ca GBP115.00 for a brand new pump, but you may ask around at car scrapyards for a second hand one.
9000 and D90 match - it depends. As a rule of thumb, assume that the pulling power is 1.5 times greater than the total weight of a fully laden vehicle it's supposed to pull.

roman: do you know wich cars/vans use this ZF74 pump? it will be easier to ask arround for a "Ford xpto" steering pump than for a ZF74...
thanks again!

Renato,
RR, but I'm not sure. Any high pressue (120bar) and high flow (13 litres/min) should do. The other difficult bit is getting the pump bolted onto the engine. Unless you can do metalworking on the cheap, it'll probably be easier to buy the pump with the required bracketry.

The pump is used on BMw and Mercades cars I believe so it may be best to start with those vehicles
Get 2 if your using 2nd hand pumps - just in case :-)
Resevoir should be large if you expect to do alot of sustained pulling or fit a fluid cooler (or in fact do both)
Or the really nice option is to fit a power takeoff with hydraulic pump - then you can get the flow rate (speed of winching) and pressure (pull) up to optimum to use your winch. These setups are available but of course - not cheap
