high mileage Discovery

I can see many Discoverys on autotrader, from early 90's, with high mileage, around £3000. Do you think I can find a good vehicle for 2-3 weeks in Morocco and also suitable for daily commuting? What to look for?

Discos can make good desert vehicles with minimum preparation

Check the following:

Inner wings - often rust thru
Rear floorpan - The same
Gearbox - lifespan seems to be 100-125k
Cam belt - when done last
Oil leaks (probabily loads)
Don't worry about suspension - your going to probabily replace that anyway
You want steel wheels not alloys
General corrosion underneath is common
Check chassis

Checkout the disovery owners club website - they may have a buyers guide

I assume you are looking at diesel - 200tdi

Also head gasket seems to go at around 100k too

Don't know if this'll be of any use to you or not, it's not very technical for sure.
Just that one of the recent LRW reviews was on a couple who'd bought and prep'd a Disco for morocco. They'd bought what seemed to be a very clean 200tdi with 45k on the clock for £2000!! Done the whole prep' for about £7000 I think, but it was a bit full on. LRW is definitly a good source for this sort of thing, regular Disco reviews. I can find out which issue it was in if you like, it's at home.

James.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
