I use Icom 144 Mhz unit (2 metre ham radio band). They have plenty of power - up to 50 watts, but you need a sound aerial correctly located to take full advantage. A quarter wave seems to work well, a 5/8 wave is better, as long as it's discreet. A good antenna mounting on a large flat area (roof) with a good earth is essential. Always mount all this equipment discreetly. Range, don't know exactly but we had up to 10 - 15 miles or so. The correct mounting of the antenna is the critical part. You can buy this equipment from ham radio shops- it's not cheap but it's well made. Try Wimo in Germany.

We have used PMR radios with success. Found them better than CB's , easier to conceal thru borders and usefull even in hotels for inter room communication). My mobile phone hands free cable also worked with my radios with vox operation (voice activated transmit).

My set came with battery chargers and rechargeable batteries for 50 quid from maplins (2 tranceivers), you can get them even cheaper but by the time you add batteries etc....... or the motorolla units look a bit more rugged but havn't tested them to see if they are. We buy a set of 2 per car as they are so cheap.

Don't bother with an inverter for battery charging - you can get a small battery charger for aa and aaa batteries that comes with a 12 volt cable for about 25 quid from jessops and other places

I am a member of a very active 4x4 club here in Dubai and because of the local terrain the main events tend to be'dunebashing'!!!
In these conditions the Motorola 5720 FRS rechargables are a real assett for comms without line of sight.They work very well up to 5km,and can be tucked out of sight easily when required.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
