Hi, I've just picked myself up a 1994 40.10 with the intention of a spot of overlanding next year.

I'm new to the forum, but there seem to be quite a few guys with the same type of truck, so was hoping for some tips....

The good news is that a lot of the camper conversion work is done, but unfortunately it has sat for quite a while and needs some spanner time to bring it back up to scratch. I guess i'm really after 3 things -

First, has anyone had any luck finding a good comprehensive manual? It came with a good one for the engine (can supply if anyone is in need?!), but the transmission and brakes are not so well covered.

I need to change the cv boots, and give the brakes an overhaul - any good parts suppliers? Iveco france (I live in toulouse) offered to get me a CV boot kit for neraly 800euros... yikes, I've been too scared to ask them for a set off disks and pads yet!

I'd also be interested to hear if you know of anything to watch out for in particular with these vehicles.

rust is often an issue on these italian trucks, timing chain issues if its been parked uo for a while , electrics also

Hi, you will also probably find that the cable/lever for engaging the diff lock will be seized, lubricate!

Cv boots, take a shed load they often break when they are stretched to extreme angles! But you will be able to change them faster than an f1 team after 3 years on the road!

Change the timing chain to a manual one! and keep and ear out for extreme jangles and adjust when needed. It will rattle to a point then goes bang. My old man gave me bits of plastic (flora tub I think) measured with a micro and wrote the thickness on them. They made great flexible feeler gauges specific for the job.

Forget about getting rid of the kangaroo suspension I don't think its possible! There was a French guy who spent a fortune on gas shocks and said he would give an update but I don't think he ever did!

At high attitude its gonna boil if worked very hard, you can either open the bonnet which helps, put the kettle on and stop. You could have a switched rad fan, I did the first two as there was no switched rad fan available.

If the starter sticks take off the exhaust before servicing its the only way and saves you stacks of hassle! I also carried a spare solenoid

I replaced the rubbers on torsion bars on the front spenny to try and get rid of the front diagonal tire wear, did seem to make any difference and after several month the new ones looked like the old ones.

To be honest my major break was my own fault I listened to other who said let the timing chain rattle! mmm! but how much is the question, over time it creeps up on you a little bit of noise each month!! When your in Goa mode its easy to ignore! don't!!! Its not a big deal to adjust just take your time! Take the front off light panel off so you have access and its easy. To be honest its a tough little cookie especially that motor as long as you look after it.

Brakes are a pain in the ass! beware the front vacuum hose, its obsolete and they go brittle and break! not funny down a Turkish mountain. Its also in a place of great heat especially when your mate tries to warm your sump oil to aid starting with his high powered Chinese wok melting stove!(melted) If I resurrect mine from the farm its stored on that will be one piece that gets the rolls Royce bomb proof treatment!

My brakes worked lovely for 6 months then never again and never figured out why! Changed fluid, server, brake lines, pump to no avail! if any one can tell me how to get reliable brakes again for an decent length of time please do. Putting it on a boat pre lovely harbor loading dock on the lake in Pakistan with bad brakes was far from funny, scary sxxt!!!!

The take off pump for hydraulic winch is a pain in the butt buy an electric one.

I actually realized writing this I didn't have to much hassle over the years I was travelling. My local iveco dealer was great for spares and my dear old ma shipped them out for me. There is a guy in Islamabad that has loads of spares for mainly the vm models but can help.

The biggest problem for me is the space, great for one but for two Im not so sure. Enjoy it but now I think I am ready for a bigger Merc or maybe a MAN or GS 800 or thorn cycle or........ luxury problems and choices hey!!
