Landcruiser II rj77 Help
Hi all,
Next month I'll start a few months trip in east-africa and I have an opportunity to buy a Landcruiser II RJ77, 2.4L petrol engine, manual, 1996 model (pics attached)

What do you think, should I go for it ? (My knowledge about the landcruisers is limited). a few questions:

- what's the fuel consumption of the petrol engine, is it thirsty (compared to the diesel ver.)?

- petrol vs.diesel availability in east & southern Africa ?

- performance ? the small petrol engine seem a bit weak on paper

- How do compare it to Toyota Surf diesel 1990-1997 models

- How do you compare it to a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel/petrol from the same age-group

It would have to be the 3.0L Surf every time.
late 1995 onwards, and it must be a 3rd generation.

Easy way to know 2nd gen from 3rd gen
2nd gen have instrument gauges with needle running top to bottom
3rd gen have instrument gauges with needle running left to right

The vehicle does have the same 3l engine as the Surf, but the Landcruiser will have a heavier duty suspension and permanent 4wd. The shorter wheelebase will be handy although a bit bouncy at speed.

Freewheeling hubs on the front have to be locked manually unless it has the dodgy automatic 4wd system found on surfs.

Also looks like it's got 750/16 tyres on steel split rims which I prefer for sub Saharan Africa but you may not.

Still looking, probably I'll go for a Pajero diesel from the early 90s.
I'm planing to go to remote places in northern Kenya & Tanzania that relay on public Transport - which is diesel fueled - so its limits me to a diesel engine (correct me if I wrong...).
The Cruiser II look really nice from the pics, but petrol ;-[ . I think the seller might have difficulties selling it because of that (actually like myself - I got hard time selling my own car ...) . If you want I can contact you both, maybe you both will benefit.

Your 60 series is in TZ isn't it? So you think that the reason it is not selling is because it is petrol? Personally I think it is the re-registration question. What about driving it back to SA and reselling it there?

You know about the petrol Paj coming into Nairobi soon, however I don't know about any deisel vehicles coming up for sale.

You bought the 60 series LC from an Israeli guy in Nairobi wasn't it? So you'll know all the usual places to look for vehicles: Sarit, YaYa, Junction etc. I'll keep looking and you'll keep trawling the web but you may just have to build the time into your schedule to get into NRB and look for your vehicle. There should be a few diesel Pajs available at the 500,000 Ksh mark to choose from but you'll have to get the thoroughly checked out.

Hi there
We have a Landcruiser II LJ70 and we've been itching for something bigger engine-wise since day 1. Petrol no good in Africa. Diesel for sure. Even though the II's are such pretty 4x4's, go diesel and 3litre with turbo. Oh, and intercooler if possible as the British cars tend to go pop in the African heat.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
