We have a Mercedes Sprinter camper that we spend the summer in Scandinavia no camp sites and the winter in Iberia occasional sites. We did a 2 month Moroccan trip in a Toyota 4runner with roof tent and found two downsides to this. First the condensation factor in the roof tent was a real pain(with those cold desert nights) and when wild camping we felt disinclined to put the tent up, if you needed to move off in a hurry it would be impossilble. So we slept inside on these occasions. The downside of a large camper is that it is difficult to diguise is flat treeless areas. Like many contributors have stated there isn't a perfect vehicle. We intend goind to Kaz and Mongolia next year and we are taking the Toyota sleeping inside the truck and using hotels once a week.
