only problem that we had having them on the back of the wheel carrier on one of the thule carriers as apposed to on the roof is they attract alot of attention. When we went to morocco, I had a battered old mountain bike that wasn't sellable in this country but still had loads of people offering to buy it, grabbing hold of it etc. My mate by comparison had a more expensive one on top of this roof rack which put it pretty much out of sight and no one showed any interest. Downside as you identified is it does get in the way of access to the roof rent.
Re the thule carrier, it aged very quickly and became difficult to fold open and closed but did hang together. We used it for about 2 years including Morrocco, Alps, Norway and only got rid of it last week because it was so battered and clogging up the garage.
