I think it has more to do with protectionist policies. Propping up the big three under the guise of safety and emissions standards (which are higher in Japan). Ford laid off 14,000 employees, Chrysler would have been gone if it weren't for Daimler-Benz, GM has been hurting since the 1980's. Anything the big three can't compete with never gets here. There appears to be no new vehicle available here that gets better than 25 mpg, and if you want diesel (other than jetta TDI) it has to be a bloody land-yacht that gets 9 mpg. Mercedes doesn't even have diesel option any more.
