Question Gearbox Oils
Hi,
We completed a trip from Morocco to Ghana and back through Niger/Algeria in Feb 02. As we have a 2002 Td5 Defender 110 we had to get it serviced by a Landy Dealer in Burkino Faso. Even though gearbox oils are not supposed to changed till 48000miles they changed both transfer and gearbox oils with non Land Rover specified products.
Ever since the service 1st and 2nd gear have got harder and harder to engage and there have been noises when the clutch was depressed. Land Rover claim that was the release bearing which has been replaced but the lower gears are still not as they where.
As you would expect they claim using the incorrect oils hasn't caused this as QUOTE "at least the gearoxes where lubricated"
Any opinions as to long term damage of the gearbox and is changing the oils back to the correct spec likely to fix this. I amtold the oils they used might be a thinker viscosity!!
Any help will be appreciate.
Mike

Mike,
I guess you will have more success putting this question to a more specialist forum, such as

I think the military use engine oil in their gearboxes. This makes gearchanges not as smooth as when filled with ATF, but it is not harmfull.
I know of people mixing ATF with 5W40 when going to hot places for a longer period.

I bet they've put EP90 in the main gearbox, very common mistake. The main box should only have ATF in (the red stuff)
Cheers,
Matt

Have a look on Difflock.com They're selling Ovoline oils and have a good report on synthetic ATF for the gearbox
